A micro spinnerbait was one of my first confidence lures.
Tiny, flashy, and easy-to-use, that 1/8 oz spinnerbait flat out caught fish!
I’ve caught lots of bass since then using many other lures, yet I’ve never forgotten the simple charm of throwing a teeny spinnerbait in small backwaters for hungry bass.
Now that I make my own baits… I’ve decided to go back to my roots and make my own micro spinnerbait.
But this isn’t going to be just any micro spinnerbait…
This is going to be an ultra premium, totally custom spinnerbait unlike anything you’d ever find in a big box store.
Nothing will be cheap – from the gleaming mag willow blade to the super ball bearing swivel to the pricey (but uber sharp) Gamakatsu hook… this bait oozes quality!

Black Crappie Spinnerbait Recipe
👉 Modified Poison Swingtail Mold ($56)
The Poison Swingtail mold produces gorgeous jigs. So I modified this mold to make similarly gorgeous spinnerbaits! Looking at using the micro-sized 1/8 oz slot for this particular spinnerbait.
Micro Spinnerbait Head
👉 Pearl White Protec Powder Paint ($8.25)
Nothing to write home about here – just your basic pearl white, which will serve as the belly color of our spinnerbait head.
👉 Blue/Black Vein Powder Paint ($4.99)
Love, love, love this vein powder paint from Barlow’s Tackle. Not only is it super affordable ($4.99!!), but it creates some stellar visual effects. Using the blue/black color here to give the top of the spinnerbait a mottled blue look… you know, like you see on a crappie!
👉 Pearl 3D Eyes 1/8″ ($3.26 / 20)
Pearl eyes simply add more eye-popping iridescence to our black crappie color pattern.
Spinnerbait Skirt
👉 1/2 Tab Clear Crystal Silicone ($2.78)
To build the belly color of this swim jig, I started with a 1/2 tab of this clear crystal silicone material. This material gives the belly a very crappie-like iridescence.
👉 1/2 Tab Blue Glimmer Silicone ($2.78)
To fill in the body, I then tied in a half tab of this blue glimmer silicone. This balances perfectly with the clear crystal silicone to provide a shimmery white belly on the spinnerbait.
👉 1 Tab Clear Crystal Blue Shadow Fish Scale Silicone ($3.58)
Crystal. Blue. Fish scale. This stuff is the perfect touch for mimicking the mottled colors of a black crappie!
Remaining Components
👉 Gamakatsu B10S Stinger Hook Size 1 ($9.30 / 25)
Okay to be clear, these Gammy hooks are not technically spinnerbait hooks – they are premium (and I mean premium) fly hooks. With that said, these also make exceptional spinnerbait hooks! I’m expecting the O’Shaughnessy bend on this Stinger hook to keep fish pinned!
👉 Spinnerbait Wire Form 0.035″ ($4.44 / 50)
Going with 0.035″ wire here. This size wire is thin enough to allow plenty of vibration, and yet strong enough not to bend and break easily when a bass hits. #bestofbothworlds
👉 Ball Bearing Swivels with Split Rings ($11.71 / 10)
These are some pricey swivels… but hear me out, these will instantly make your spinnerbait better than the vast majority of mass produced spinnerbaits.
With these premium swivels, you can expect the blades on your spinnerbait to start turning the instant you start reeling it in!
👉 Premium Nickel Mag Willow Blade Size 2 ($2.47 / 10)
I can hear it already… “Blaine, why not use something more popular, like willow or Colorado blades?”
My answer? Because very few spinnerbaits use mag willow blades!
Mag willow blades offer a great balance between willow blades and Colorado blades. Typically willow blades offer a lot of flash with little vibration. On the other end of the spectrum, Colorado blades offer less flash but lots of thump and vibration underwater.
Consider mag willows the perfect balance – a versatile blade that offers both flash and vibration!
